Creating a Standard Journal
You can create a standard journal from the journals home page.
This topic does not cover the currency override functionality available in journal entry. If you are working in a multi-currency environment and want to know how to apply currency overrides, see Overriding Currency Values and Rates on a Journal.
Classic Edition
To create a new standard journal:
- Click the Journals tab.
- Click New next to Recent Journals on the journals home page.
- Accept, or amend, the default journal date (today).
- Accept, or amend, the default journal currency (home).
- [Optional] Enter a reference and/or description. Click the
icon to complete any custom fields that have been set up for sub-analysis mapping

- Accept, or amend, the default accounting period for this journal. This period must be open.
- Add one or more journal line items, as described in Journal Line Items.
- [Optional] Click Validate on the button bar to check the journal as a whole is valid for posting.
- When you have finished, click Save. You can also click Save & New to save the changes to the current record and then immediately begin to create another.
- When the journal is ready to go, click Post. A posted journal has a status of "Complete". Instead of clicking Save and then Post separately, you can click Save & Post to perform both actions together.
Extended Edition
- Click the Journals tab.
- Click New next to Recent Journals on the journals home page.
- Accept, or amend, the default journal date (today).
- If you want to set the journal currency to home currency
, leave the Derive Currency checkbox selected. To provide an alternative currency, deselect the checkbox.
- [Optional] Type a journal reference and/or description.
- If you want the application to derive the period automatically from the journal date, leave the Derive Period checkbox selected. To provide an alternative period, deselect the checkbox.
- When you have finished, click Save. You can also click Save & New to save the changes to the current record and then immediately begin to create another.
- Add one or more journal line items, as described in Journal Line Items.
- When the journal is ready to go, click Post. A posted journal has a status of "Complete".
A saved journal has an initial status of "In Progress" and is allocated a journal number. See Posting Journals for information on how to post an "In Progress" journal.
