Generating Recognition Schedules When the Source Record Is Fully Recognized

Sometimes you might need to edit a source record's Total Revenue, Total Cost, Start Date or End Date when the record is already fully recognized. If you need to do this, you must deselect the field on the source record that indicates it is fully recognized otherwise recognition schedules cannot be generated for it.

Once you have made your edit, the next time you generate recognition schedules the source record's recognition schedule is updated with the latest Total Revenue, Total Cost, Start Date or End Date. The source record's existing recognition schedule lines are unchanged because they are "Complete". Where necessary, additional recognition schedule lines are generated as described below.

If you edit the source record's value, an additional "Recognizable" schedule line is generated to correct the amount that should have been scheduled to date:

  • If you decrease the source record's value, this catchup adjustment is a negative amount because the source record has been over-recognized.
  • If you increase the source record's value, this catchup adjustment is a positive amount because the source record has more to recognize.

The recognition schedule line for this catchup adjustment is usually generated in the source record's final period.

If you edit a source record's start or end date to extend its duration and the record is using an Equal Split recognition template:

  • If the source record's start date is brought forward, schedule lines are not created for the additional periods because we do not create new schedule lines with a value of zero.
  • If the source record's end date is put back, a schedule line is generated for the catchup adjustment immediately after the last "Complete" line. Further lines are generated to schedule the outstanding amount equally over the remaining periods.

If you edit a source record's start or end date to reduce its duration and the record is using an Equal Split recognition template:

  • If there is no change in value, no additional schedule lines are generated.
  • If there is a change in value, a schedule line is generated for the catchup adjustment in the period of the new end date.

The following examples illustrate how recognition schedule lines are generated when a fully recognized source record using an Equal Split recognition template is edited.

These examples assume you have a fully recognized source record with a total revenue of 12000 using an Equal Split - Months recognition template over one calendar year. This means that it has twelve "Complete" recognition schedule lines for 1000 each:
