Planning Units

A planning unit defines what a measure represents, that is, what the numeric values in your plan are referring to. For example, you might have a measure called Best Case and its value for a given cell might be 100. This value can represent different concepts and, in different cases, it might be $100, 100€, 100%, 100 hours, 100m, and so on. In WorkGrid, you can use planning units to describe the numeric values.

If a measure is linked to a unit, all the plan cells using the measure automatically have the unit applied. This is useful when the measure always has the same unit in all your plans. For example, a measure in your corporate currency or a measure that represents percentage. For more information about linking a measure to a unit, see Creating a Measure.

If a measure is not linked to a unit, plan cells using the measure don't have a unit applied by default. You can manually apply a unit to those cells. For more information, see Applying a Planning Unit to a Plan Cell.

In some cases, a measure might have a different unit in different plans. This is especially true for currencies. For example, the same measure might be in USD in one plan but in EUR in another. In this case, you can assign a default unit to the plan. The default unit is applied to any measures that aren't linked to a unit. The measures that are linked to a unit, for example, a corporate currency measure, still use the linked unit and ignore the plan-level default unit. You can define a default unit when creating a plan from scratch. When creating a plan from a data source, you can specify the dimension that contains the unit's code value.
