Create a new text field on each object you want to contain sequence numbers. When you create a sequence format, you specify this field as the target field that stores the generated sequence number. If required, you can add these fields to the relevant page layouts.
Depending on your requirements, you can specify that this field contains a unique value or is an external ID. For more information about creating custom fields, see the Salesforce Help.
Create one or more sequence formats and specify where you want to store the generated sequence numbers. For more information, see Creating a Sequence Format.
To generate sequence numbers using the Generate Sequences scheduled job, you must first enable the Scheduled Jobs feature in Feature Console. For more information about the Feature Console, see Enabling and Disabling Features and Scheduled Jobs.
You can set up Foundations to create error messages to help you resolve issues if your sequencing job fails. For more information, see Setting up Sequencing Error Messages.
Both admins and standard users can generate sequence numbers. For more information, see Generating Sequence Numbers.
If you need to remove and regenerate sequence numbers or apply sequence numbers to old records that do not contain sequence numbers, you can adjust the last run date and generate sequence numbers. For more information, see Adjusting the Sequence Last Run Date.
