Moving Tasks

You can move tasks in a variety of ways.

Moving Tasks in the Hierarchy

To move a task in the hierarchy:

  1. Select the task that you want to move.
  2. If you want to demote the task, click Indent. If you want to move the task up one level in the hierarchy, click Outdent.
    Note:

We recommend indenting a maximum of 15 tasks in one go.

We recommend outdenting a maximum of eight tasks in one go.

    Tip:

The Start and End dates of related tasks such as parent tasks are updated to reflect the change.

Moving Tasks in the List

There are several ways in which you can change the order in which tasks appear.

To move a task by dragging it, click and drag the task that you want to move in the Tasks pane.

Note:

If you click and drag a parent task, the child tasks are moved with it.

If you are moving a parent task, ensure that only that task is selected before you drag it. If you do not to this, selected child tasks are promoted to the same level as the parent task.

To move a task using the up or down button:

  1. Select the task that you want to move in the Tasks pane or the Schedule pane.
  2. Click Up or Down depending on whether you want to move the task up or down.
    Note:

This action does not change the start or end date of any tasks. If the task is a child task, it is moved up or down within its current parent task.

For information about sorting tasks, see Viewing Tasks in the Tasks Pane.

Dragging Tasks in the Schedule Pane

When you drag a task horizontally in the Schedule pane this changes the start and end dates of that task. For information about changing the start and end dates of tasks, see Changing Start and End Dates.

Note:

You cannot drag tasks vertically in the Schedule pane. If you want to move the position of a task in Project Task Gantt you can do so on the Tasks pane. See Moving Tasks in the List.
