Creating Project Hierarchies

To organize large projects into phases, grouped tasks, and so on in Gantt, you can create a hierarchy of project tasks by selecting one or more tasks in the Task Grid or Gantt Chart, and then indenting or outdenting them. You can also move one or more selected tasks freely by dragging them to a new location or level in the hierarchy.

The start date, end date and duration of a parent task reflects the details within its child tasks. If you move a parent task, its child tasks are also moved.

Note:
To select multiple project tasks when performing these actions, press and hold Shift, or Ctrl (PC) or Cmd (Mac) while selecting the tasks. The tasks can be at different levels in the hierarchy.
Tip: To improve performance for large projects, group tasks by creating nested parent hierarchies.

Moving, Indenting or Outdenting Project Tasks

You can update a project hierarchy by moving, indenting and outdenting tasks.

The tasks must be able to be moved. For example, you cannot move a task up or down a level if it is already at the top or bottom of the hierarchy.

Moving Project Tasks

To move a single project task:

  1. Select and hold for the task.
  2. Drag the task to another location in the hierarchy.

To move multiple tasks:

  1. Select the tasks.
  2. Select and hold for any of the selected tasks.
  3. Drag the task to another location in the hierarchy.

If you move or delete a parent task, its child tasks are also moved or deleted.

Indenting and Outdenting Tasks

  • To move your selected tasks up one level in the hierarchy, click

When you have completed your changes, click Save.

Tip: To improve performance for large projects when multi-selecting tasks to indent or outdent, change individual parent tasks rather than multiple parent and child tasks.
