Scoping Variables Overview

Scoping variables are named numeric values you define on a Scoping Requirement Set to capture and aggregate key factors from a scoping session — such as complexity or risk — that help inform your estimate. Each variable has an aggregation type that controls how its responses are combined when a scoping session runs.

You can create, edit, and delete scoping variables from the Manage Scoping Variables window on the Scoping Requirement Set record. For more information, see Managing Scoping Variables.

Aggregation Types

The Aggregation Type field is required and controls how values are combined. You can select one of the following types:

  • Sum — Adds all contributed values together.
  • Average — Calculates the average of all contributed values.

When you clone a Scoping Requirement Set, all of its scoping variables are cloned with it. Cloned variables are independent copies — changes to variables on the original set do not affect the clone, and vice versa.
